1. Interested to read this – particularly your comment about having to google some of Winton’s terminology. I haven’t read it but did read his novel Cloudstreet, which a bookseller recommended on a recent visit to Australia (apparently it ranks v high amongst Australian’s favourite novels). That, too, was full of evocative language which I didn’t know but could often guess at. I’d never read anything quite like it – in a way rambling, but eventually pulled together; the journey itself viscerally compelling. I would strongly recommend it.
