#amreading – What, Why, While

What (am I currently reading)?

I am currently reading Being Alert! by Charlie Laidlaw @claidlawauthor .

Thanks to Reads and Reels @shanannigans81   for providing me with a copy.

Blurb (from Amazon.co.uk)

Being Alert! begins in January 2020 as the British prime minister, Winston Spragg, first learns about a new illness that seems to be centred in a city in China that nobody has heard of.

Following in a long tradition of British satire, the book populates Downing Street and Whitehall with an inept prime minister presiding over a dysfunctional government as it deals with an existential threat that rapidly becomes a national crisis.

Like satires before it, the book uses humour to paint an uncomfortable picture of a government seemingly as concerned about justifying itself as working to protect the country.

Why (have I chosen to read it)?

I thought some satire about what the British Parliament have been up to during the Covid-19 pandemic would give some light relief from the British newspapers.  So far it is laugh out loud, and informative.

While (I  am reading it)?

October is the month to find squash on sale along the roadside, including pumpkins – usually just with a tin to leave payment in.  I love all the colours, and for me this is a beautiful sight of autumn – and a reminder to make Pumpkin and Ginger Soup (served with warm bread).

My review of Staying Alert! will be up on EmmabBooks.com by the end of the month.

All the best, Emma
