In the Company of Strangers by Awais Khan

Strong and compelling contemporary fiction

Mona is a lady of leisure in Lahore’s high society, and spends her time attending parties and meeting friends.  Ali is a (clothes) model struggling to support his brother and mother.  Both appear to have glamorous lives, however the reality of their worlds is very different from what they seem.

Set in Lahore, Pakistan this is a beautifully written story of people living in a world of glamour, but sharing their apparently ideal lives with an undercurrent of fear.  Terrorism, love and family loyalty share the pages of this strong and thought provoking story.

Initially I thought this was going to be an “unhappy wife meets younger man” story and questioned whether to keep going, however I am glad I did as this turned into a book that kept me awake at night, not turning the pages, but thinking about the lives of the people I had just read about (well more their real life counterparts).   The author, Awais Khan, is from Lahore.
